A graduate of the Glenn Gould School of Music, Paul Barna has both a Performance Diploma Program degree and Bachelor’s of Music in. He was also a graduate of the precollege level Young Artists Performance Academy at the Royal Conservatory of Music studying violin with professor Atis Bankas, and later switching to study viola with Steven Dann. He has performed as soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player throughout Canada and recently recorded a JUNO nominated disc of Mahler’s 9thSymphony with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada.

Paul was apart of the Inaugural season of one of Canada’s newest and best concert halls, Koerner hall, where he performed regularly with the Royal Conservatory Orchestra. Since then, he has had the opportunity to work under the baton of renowned conductors including Zubin Mehta, Peter Oundjian, Leon Fleisher, Jean- Philippe Tremblay, Uri Mayer, Johannes Debus and Julian Kuerti. Most recently, Paul Barna became co-founder and artistic director of Norfolk Music, a brand new music festival dedicated to bring classical and world music to Norfolk County in the beautiful town of Port Dover.

Not only a devout performer, Paul is a sought after educator and instructor. He is currently serving on the string faculty at Long & McQuade Music Centre in Burlington, works for the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board as well as maintaining a small private studio. His teachings have led him to substitute at various music schools, including Axis Music in Toronto; a string program developed for under privileged youth. He has also served as faculty assistant at the Interprovincial Music Camp in Parry Sound.

Paul has extensive experience with the Royal Conservatory of Music Examination requirements, preparing students regularly to successfully achieve high marks. His students compete in various music festivals and local competitions and receive a well-balanced approach to musical study with a focus on technique, music theory, ear training, orchestral and chamber playing as well as musical and artistic development. Paul pushes each student to the best of their abilities while constantly making music a fun and inspiring experience. Paul teaches all levels and ages of students from beginners to advanced students.
